Tips when sending items for hallmarking

Each separate fineness or standard of metal must be sent with a separate completed hallnote. Any special instructions regarding sampling or marking should be completed on a separate special instruction sheet and attached to the back of the hallnote. When possible include scrap or off cuts of the metal used to make the piece or if it is cast leave a small section of sprue attached for testing. In the case of finished goods this is not necessary. If you want the Assay Office to apply your sponsor's mark please tick the box on the hallnote. If you want the mark applied in a specific location please indicate with an ink line on the piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the minimum charge?

A .The minimum charge is the basic cost of processing any parcel regardless of quantities. Before any item can be hallmarked it must be checked, booked onto our system, sampled and tested. The minimum charge covers the cost of these basic processes. Any additional services and where the Assay Office apply the Sponsor's mark will be charged in addition to the minimum charge.

Q. Why must I fill in a separate hallnote for each metal standard I submit?

A. Different metal standard i.e. 9ct, 18ct, 925 silver requires to be sampled, tested and marked separately. For this reason they must be submitted on a separate hallnote. Articles for laser marking should also be submitted on a separate hallnote.

Q. If my goods fail the assay test will I still have to pay?

A. Yes, you will have the choice of marking the goods down to the next available standard or have them returned unmarked. Regardless of your choice, you will be charged as if the goods had passed. All consignments are tested at least three times before a decision is to fail is made.
